From the IELTS Exam to English Conversation (英会話)
Sarah’s Journey to English Fluency:
Her Struggle with IELTS Preparation
There was a young student named Sarah who was struggling with her English studies. She knew that she needed to improve her language skills in order to pass her upcoming IELTS exam. She had heard that using transition words and transitional phrases in her essays would help her score higher but she didn’t know where to start.
Discovering Useful Study Resources
Luckily, Sarah found an IELTS sample test online that included a list of transition words for essays and past participle examples that she could use to improve her writing. She also discovered a website with a lot of resources for learning English, including an English word list and ESL conversation scripts to practice her speaking skills.
Grammar Practice and Listening Skills
Sarah spent a lot of time studying grammar rules, like the difference between countable and uncountable nouns and practiced using verb tenses. She even found a list of verbs and a list of abstract nouns to expand her vocabulary.
Using Ministry of Education Resources
To improve her listening skills, Sarah found some listening practice exercises online. She started listening to the English dialogues and conversations on a regular basis. She also discovered the Ministry of Education in Japan had resources to help her learn kanji. This was helpful for her since she lived in Sapporo and wanted to practice her English conversation (英会話) skills.
Preparing for the IELTS Speaking Test
As the date for her IELTS exam approached, Sarah knew that she needed to prepare for the speaking test as well. She found a sample of the IELTS speaking test that she could use to practice and worked on using contractions/grammar correctly. She also practiced using gerunds and infinitives in sentences and learned more about the to-infinitive grammar structure.
Exam Day Success and Beyond
On the day of her exam, Sarah felt nervous but prepared. She used transition sentences to organize her ideas and she made sure to include a variety of transition words and transitional phrases in her essay. She was able to use a lot of the words from her English vocabulary list and even remembered some of the uncountable nouns she studied from a list.
After the exam, Sarah felt relieved and proud of herself. She knew that she had worked hard to improve her English skills and that all of her studying had paid off. She even made some friends in the hotel where she stayed during the test and they practiced speaking English together.
Continued Practice and Teaching Others
From that day on, Sarah continued to practice her English skills. She could use past tense and infinitive verbs correctly in her conversations. She even shared her knowledge with others by creating her own English conversation script to help her friends learn. Thanks to her hard work and dedication, Sarah became a confident and fluent English speaker. She never had to worry about hotlinking her way through a conversation again.
