some vs. any grammar

Some vs. Any

Some and any are similar in meaning, but they are used differently time to time.

For example, any is used in negative statements, (sentences using the word not). While some is used in positive statements that do not contain the word not.

Let’s look at two incorrect sentences and why are they wrong as an example, also how can we fix them.

Grammar: Some vs. Any

✖ That man has any money.

Why it’s wrong:

This is a positive statement. The sentence says that the man does have money. However, any is supposed to be used in negative statements. When you use any in a positive statement, it sounds strange.

Some ways to correct it:

Use some instead:

The man has some money.

Use an adjective that works in both negative and positive statements instead:

△ The man has much money. → The man has a lot of money.

Use no adjective at all:

The man has money.

✖ There are not some trees in this book.

Why it’s wrong:

This statement is negative. It means that the book has no trees in it. Some is supposed to only be used in positive statements.

Some ways to correct it:

Use any instead:

There are not any trees in this book.

Use an adjective that works in positive or negative statements instead:

There are not a lot of trees in this book. (The meaning of this sentence is different though.)

Use no adjective at all:

△ There are not trees in this book. → There are no trees in this book.

もう迷わない!”any” と “some” の使い分け

よく耳にする “was going to” ってどんな意味?
「自分で」は “myself” ? それとも “by myself” ?
【–’s】と【–’】所有のアポストロフィの使い方、おさらい!

先日、友達とカフェでコーヒーを飲みながら話をしていて、店員さんに「お水もらえますか?」と言った時に、ふと思いました。

この「お水もらえますか?」を英語にすると、どうなるでしょうか?

Could I have any water?
Could I have some water?
疑問文には “any” を使うと習ったような気もしますが、”any” と “some” の使い分け、しっかりできていますか?

学校で習った “any” と “some” の使い分け
私の遠い記憶では、any/anything →疑問文と否定文で使う、some/something →それ以外(肯定文)で使う、と習った気がします。

例えば、こんな感じです。

【疑問文】お金を持っていますか?
Do you have any money?
【否定文】お金を少しも持っていません
I don’t have any money.
【肯定文】お金をいくらか持っています
I have some money.
このように使い分けると習いました。
基本的には、これである程度の使い分けができると思います。

でも、疑問文なのに “some” が使われている文章を目にしたり、実際に使われている場面に遭遇したことはありませんか?

「お水をもらえますか?」を英語で
疑問文・否定文は “any”、それ以外は “some” のルールが通用しない場合も、実はたくさんあるんです。

例えば、冒頭に出てきた「お水をもらえますか?(お水をください)」と店員さんに言う時。

“Could I”、”Can I” など表現の違いはありますが、たいてい “Could I have some water?” のように “some water” を使います。

これは疑問文なのに、なぜ “any water” にならないのでしょうか?
また、疑問文で “any” ではなく “some” を使うのって、どんな場合なのでしょうか?

この使い分けもEnglish Grammar in Useに簡潔で分かりやすく解説されています。

“any” と “some” の使い分け方
出だしはこう書いてあります。

In general we use some in positive sentences and any in negative sentences

これは分かります。でも、次が学校で習ったこととはちょっと違います。

We use both some and any in questions

疑問文では “some” と “any” どちらも使うと断言しています。
疑問文では “any” を使うと習ったので混乱するんです。この際「疑問文では両方使う」と覚え直しましょう。

さらに解説は続きます。ここからが疑問文での “some” の使い方です。

We use some to talk about a person or thing that we know exists, or we think exists.
We use some in questions when we offer or ask for things.

そして、こんな例文が載っています。

“Are you waiting for somebody?”

これを尋ねた人は、そこにいる人が誰かを待っていると思って尋ねているので “somebody” を使っています。

“Can I have some sugar, please?”

これも “Can I have some water?” と同じようにカフェで使うフレーズです。
砂糖も水も、もらえる砂糖や水があると思っている前提で「もらえますか?」と聞いているので “some” になるんですね。

ここで分かりやすい例を一つ挙げてみましょう。

Can I ask you some questions?
あなたにいくつか質問してもいいですか?
Do you have any questions?
何か質問はありますか?
1番の文章では、もちろん質問が存在する前提で「いいですか?」と聞いているので “some” になりますが、逆に2番のような、そもそも質問があるか分からないという状況で聞く場合は “any” となります。

疑問文で使われる “any” と “some”
“any” と “some” を使った疑問文は、身近なところに登場します。

affogato (an Italian coffee-based dessert)
カフェで注文を取る時にウェイトレスさんが “Would you like something to drink?” と、最初に言うことがあります。

店員さんは、飲み物をオファーするニュアンスで「いかがですか?」と聞いているので “something” と言っています。

ここで “Would you like anything to drink?” を使うこともありますが、これは飲み物がいるかどうか分からない「飲み物はいりますか?」というニュアンスになります。

そして、注文を取った店員さんが最後に言う決まり文句は “Anything else?” ですね。これも、他に必要なものがあるのか無いのかが分からなくて聞いているので “anything” が使われます。

“something to drink” と “a drink” の違いは何?

Would you like something to drink?
あなた: Do you have any milk?
友達: Yes.
あなた: Can I have some?

牛乳があるかどうか分からなくて、ないかもしれないと思いながら尋ねる時は “any”、あることが分かった後の「少しもらえますか?」には “some” を使っています。

“any” と “some” の使い分けは微妙なので、間違えても通じないことはありません。
でも、耳にした時にちょっと意識してみると、自分でもすんなり使い分けができるようになると思いますよ。

The origin of the adjective some

The adjective “some” comes from Old English (sum). It meant “a, a certain one, something, a certain quantity; a certain number;” and was used with numerals “out of” (as in sum feowra “one of four”); from Proto-Germanic *sumaz (source also of Old Saxon, Old Frisian, Old High German sum, Old Norse sumr, Gothic sums), from PIE *smm-o-, suffixed form of root *sem- (1) “one; as one, together with.” For substitution of -o- for -u-.

It was used as a pronoun around 1100.

It was used as an adverb from the late 13th century.

The meaning “remarkable” is attested from 1808, in colloquial American English.

The possessive form of “some” was rare, but attested from the 1560s.

Many combination forms like “somewhat, sometime, and somewhere” were used in Middle English but often written as two words until the 17th to 19th century.

Somewhen is rare but was first used in the 19 century.

It is used almost exclusively in combination with the more common compounds.

Somewho “someone” is attested from the late 14th century but didn’t say around for long.

Scott (1816) has somegate somewhere, in some way, somehow,” and somekins some kind of a” is recorded from about 1200.

Get some “have sexual intercourse” is attested from 1899 in a quote attributed to Abe Lincoln from 1840.
